The French automaker Renault announced that it will install speed limiters on one of its most popular models, the Clio, as part of the “Human First” initiative aimed at improving road safety.

The system, called “safety car,” limits the maximum speed to 110 km/h, below the speed limit on British highways. For now, this feature is only available in France and can be deactivated later through an authorized Renault dealer.

Additionally, the brand is betting on the popularity of the Clio among young and novice drivers to implement this measure, which has an installation cost of $64.63.

The decision comes in response to the stagnation in the reduction of traffic deaths, with data indicating that more than half of fatal accidents caused by speeding involve drivers under 35 years old.

Since 2022, all Renault cars have been equipped with automatic speed limiters (up to 180 km/h) and, more recently, systems that assess driver performance, penalizing behaviors such as speeding, unsafe following distance, and improper lane changes.

Another feature is the “Safety Score,” which gives the driver a score of up to 100 points after each trip, considering the activation of systems like automatic braking, drowsiness alert, and lane-keeping assistance. The idea is to encourage safer driving, possibly lowering insurance costs, although Renault has not confirmed whether the data will be shared with insurers.

The brand states that the goal is to promote positive behavior behind the wheel, not to punish drivers.
